Although the specifics can vary, most waterless urinals rely on the same scientific principles–specifically, that of density or specific gravity. Density is a measurement of how much mass is distributed over a given volume, and it plays a big role in how various materials interact with each other. For example, density is what causes coins to sink but wood planks to float–even though a coin is smaller than a plank, its mass is more tightly packed together than that of the water, causing it to sink. Waterless urinals use this principle to ensure that urine can flow into the pipes, but also that odor-causing gasses can’t flow back out.
