How Waterless Urinals Work

Here at hybridH2o, we want to help you make the switch to sustainable restroom products, and one of the best changes you can make in order to make your facility more sustainable and environmentally friendly is to install waterless urinals. In our experience, while most people are on board with the idea of saving water, many remain skeptical that waterless urinals could be as effective as traditional models. To help remedy this situation, our team has put together this article explaining how waterless urinals work so that you can make an informed decision about what’s best for your business.

Although the specifics can vary, most waterless urinals rely on the same scientific principles–specifically, that of density or specific gravity. Density is a measurement of how much mass is distributed over a given volume, and it plays a big role in how various materials interact with each other. For example, density is what causes coins to sink but wood planks to float–even though a coin is smaller than a plank, its mass is more tightly packed together than that of the water, causing it to sink. Waterless urinals use this principle to ensure that urine can flow into the pipes, but also that odor-causing gasses can’t flow back out.
